Frostbitt

In the spring of 1940 the Narvik mountains were full of soldiers who could no longer find their own side. Two of them — one Norwegian, one German — were separated from their units in a heavy snowstorm and ended up in the same abandoned hut. They were enemies. They were also, for several hours, the only other person in the world.

Frostbitt is built on those hours. Not the battle, not the weapons, not the heroes — the small, silent stretch where the war has to wait outside, because the cold is the more urgent problem.

An involuntary duet

The piece is danced by two men who do not trust each other, and the mistrust is choreographic before it is emotional: no contact, constant watching, a body always half-turned toward the door. Trust, if it arrives at all, has to be built the slow way — through repetition, and through having survived the same hour.

The dramaturgy follows the five stages of grief — denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance — and walks two men through all five on the way to what looks like a certain death.

A story, not a state

Frostbitt is driven by a journey from a to b, and the journey is interior. It is a story, not a state.

There is no dialogue. The narrative is carried physically, against a realistic sound design built alongside the choreography rather than laid over it afterwards. Headlamps do real work on stage. The staging is deliberately spare and built to travel, so the piece can reach young audiences wherever they are.
